Raising from angel investors in the UK

For most British technology startups, angels are the first serious institutional-quality capital they raise. This page sets out what angel investors look for and how to approach them.

What angel investors look for

Angels back teams and defensibility before they back traction. At seed stage there is rarely enough revenue history to underwrite, so the question becomes whether this team, with this technology, can build something others cannot copy.

  • A technical or domain advantage that is genuinely hard to replicate
  • Protected or protectable intellectual property
  • A founding team with credibility in the problem space
  • A clearly identified customer and a route to reach them
  • A sensible raise: enough to hit a real milestone, not more

What we fund

Cambridge Capital Group members back IP-rich, defensible technology companies raising under £2m. We do not invest in consultancies, service businesses or retail.

How to approach us

Founders apply through our application form covering the company, the team, the technology, traction and the raise. Companies that pass screening are invited to present to members at a pitch session.

One portfolio CEO described our process this way: the sessions are designed so that both investors and companies have the highest possible opportunity to connect in an informed and productive manner.

Common questions

How much do UK angels typically invest?

Individual angels commonly write £10,000 to £100,000. Syndicated through a network, a round of several hundred thousand to £2m is achievable.

Do I need revenue to raise from angels?

Not always. Deep tech companies frequently raise pre-revenue on the strength of the technology, IP position and team, though evidence of customer demand always helps.

How long does an angel round take?

From first approach to funds in the bank, three to six months is typical.
